Got WiFi?

The Columbia WiFi initiative is a continuation of the Columbia Regional WiFi Initiative, launched in early 2003 to promote the expansion of wireless public internet access points (known as "hotspots") in and around Columbia. The development of WiFi hot spots has been made possible by the joint collaboration of USC and the City of Columbia, as well as with the support of local business sponsors. The ultimate goal of Columbia WiFi is to attract private WiFi companies into Columbia, providing broad access to all citizens and driving innovation in the region.

Benefits of Wi-Fi:

WiFi is a rapidly evolving technology that is highly standardized, easily deployed and simple to employ. In addition to increased productivity and efficiency, users also benefit from:

  • Speed - Access to the Internet is much faster than dial up and doesn't require plugging into a telephone outlet.
  • Mobility - Free access (in some cases) to information via the Internet.
  • Connectivity - No wires are required, and accessibility is offered via multiple technology devices. (i.e., laptop computer, PDA, etc.)

What do you need? You don't need much equipment to utilize the Internet anymore. Most PDA's and laptops manufactured today are developed with WiFi capabilities. And, if you're using an older technology device, wireless cards are available to enable wireless capability. Keep in mind that in order to access the Internet with a WiFi enabled device you must be near a wireless access point, otherwise known as a "hotspot". If you see the WiFi Zone® logo at a location around town, you've found a local hotspot!
