Free admission, cash bar and a convivial atmosphere are hallmarks of Science Café, home to "The Year of the SmartState" – a new, year-long partnership between EngenuitySC and the SmartState Program™ (also known as the South Carolina Centers of Economic Excellence Program).

Dr. Filipi’s main research is in alternative and hybrid powertrain systems, advanced IC engine concepts, alternative fuels and energy for transportation. He holds the Timken Endowed Chair in Automotive Design and Development within the SmartState Center for Automotive Design and Development, one of four Centers within the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR), Clemson University’s world-class automotive research campus.

Notably, Clemson offers the nation’s first PhD in Automotive Engineering.

Dr. Filipi is the recipient of the SAE Forest R. McFarland Award and the IMechE Donald Julius Groen Award. He has previously held two research professorships at the University of Michigan: Mechanical Engineering Department and the Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

On the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m., knowledge economy movers and shakers convene at Science Café at Speakeasy to enjoy high quality adult beverages and hear free talks by some of South Carolina's top leaders in medicine, technology and innovation. Interruption, questions and discussion are not only encouraged – the rules of Science Café make it a priority to engage with speakers and push the boundaries of the conventional presentation format.
