South Carolina Citizens' Schools

To love science one does not need to know the molecular structure of a frog or even know how many elements are in the Periodic Table. One must simply be interested. The South Carolina Citizens' School Program is a joint program between the University of South Carolina NanoCenter and Benedict College, in an effort to engage those with an interest in science and engineering and present the material in a way that it is easily understandable.

Citizens' Schools have focused on three core topics:

  • Citizens' School of Nanotechnology: Nanotechnology is an important family of techniques, which study and manipulate atoms, molecules, and other matter at a very small scale. A
nanometer is one-billionth of a meter; a water molecule [H2O], for example, is about a third of a nanometer.
  • Citizens' School on Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Technology: The University of South Carolina is a major center of research for fuel cell and hydrogen technology. Participants in the Citizens' School on Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Technology will meet  representatives from academia, economic development, and
national labs and received an in-depth overview of the fundamentals of fuel cell technology, as well as the latest discoveries, innovations, and breakthroughs.
  • Citizens' School on the Environment: The Citizens' School on the Environment will address issues of climate change, renewable energy technologies, ethical issues concerning the environment, and other topics.
