Nanotechnology

Controlling matter on an atomic or molecular level will change they way we live on a daily basis. The strides The University of South Carolina NanoCenter has made in science and engineering studies of nanometer-scale structures, their unique properties, and their integration into functional units has been phenomenal. It fosters multidisciplinary research and education efforts involving faculty whose combined expertise spans the disciplines of a comprehensive research university.

The NanoCenter’s mission:

  1. Create a focal point in South Carolina for research in nanoscale science and technology.
  2. Generate new opportunities for Center participants to compete for external funding from federal and industrial sources.
  3. Foster trans-disciplinary collaboration among a critical mass of researchers spanning the sciences, engineering, and medicine.
  4. Provide learning opportunities, through courses and research experiences, for undergraduate and graduate students - the high technology workforce of the future.
  5. Promote educational and technical outreach to collaborate with at sister institutions (Clemson, MUSC, Historically Black Colleges and Universities), regional campuses, and K-12 schools.
  6. Advance discussion of environmental, societal, ethical, and philosophical issues raised by nano-science and -technology.
