Creating an Environment that Supports Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship emphasizes creativity, risk-taking and commercialization. Whether it is the research professor who takes steps to bring a discovery to market, a college student forming a company around a patented technology, or an existing company spinning-off a successful, high-growth-potential division, all must embrace an ethic that encourages creating wealth through innovation. Communities striving to develop a robust knowledge-oriented economy should encourage entrepreneurs by providing facilities and services that cater to the needs of new and rapidly growing companies. Government, higher education and business leaders in the Columbia region believe in entrepreneurship as a method of economic development that grows wealth from within, in addition to existing methods that recruit outside companies. One such example of this commitment is the FastTrac Program, which provides guidance and training for entrepreneurs interested in starting a business. Legislation designed to assist entrepreneurs, such as the research university innovation centers act play a pivotal role in assisting entrepreneurs in their start-up efforts.
